Meet the Team: Mareia Abed

What do you enjoy the most about working at Spreckley?

It’s an obvious answer but it’s the people. Not just my colleagues but my clients too. We’re a great bunch. I also enjoy pretty much all of the work we do, there’s a variety that keeps it interesting.

How did you hear about Spreckley and why did you want to join?

After I graduated, I completed a traineeship run by the Taylor Bennet Foundation, which I had heard about through a friend. They offer a six-week training programme in PR. It’s great because you get to experience a bit of everything, internal comms, B2B, commercial and consumer. You get a chance to spend some time working in-house and at agencies as well.

It was quite intense, but it was helpful because I tried out different types of PR and realised that I like B2B tech, then I started searching for jobs and like most people at Spreckley, found myself speaking with Angela at May and Stephens.

What’s been the most exciting PR campaign you’ve worked on and why?

It would have to be the campaign we did to promote the region of Setouchi in Japan. That was quite fun. It was only a short project over a few months, but it was different to my usual work and certainly interesting. We sent a few journalists to Japan; it’s a shame they didn’t take us as well. It would be great to work on something like that again.

Other than that, I have enjoyed working with InvestiFi. They’re growing really fast and it’s exciting to play a role in that process. I find working with startups really rewarding as the impact of effective PR campaign feels even more tangible on their overall success.

What was your first job?

My first ever job was in a school uniform shop in northwest London. I was only there for 6 weeks but it felt like I was there for longer. I assisted parents and students in finding the correct sizes and uniform items and mainly worked during the summer break, which was very busy.

I also worked as a teaching assistant straight after leaving university. I’m glad I tried it and realised that I wanted to work in the corporate world. I was able to work flexibly until I landed my job in PR.

If you weren’t in PR, what would you be doing instead?

I’d like to be a journalist reporting from war zones. That was my plan at one point in my life, but my mum wasn’t so keen. I wanted to do something impactful and report on things that really mattered in the world.

Or I’d be an entrepreneur, but I like my sleep a bit too much at the moment. Maybe an influencer?

Tell us one thing about you that surprises people?

People see me as a demure and quiet girlie and are often surprised by the reality – I can’t hold onto one idea before the next one barges in.

People also think its odd that I find it quite creepy to listen to an artist’s music once they’ve passed away. The thought of it creeps me out. It’s a shame because I hear Michael Jackson is some kind of pop legend.

What’s your favourite thing to do outside of work?

I like going on a lot of hikes and walks. I like painting, but mostly nature. I can’t paint people, so it’s mainly landscapes or a forest or the ocean. I’ve been working with gouache a lot lately.

Who had the most influence on you growing up?

Not a person but a book series. I used to be obsessed with the ‘Rainbow Magic’ series and wrote my own version when I was 12 years old. It inspired me to go and study English literature at university which has ultimately led me to Spreckley.

What’s your go-to lunch on Leather Lane?

It used to be Marrakesh Grill, but I’ve recently converted to Peruvian grill. It’s the same thing, essentially, but I’ve switched teams. It’s good value, the portions are big, and the chili sauce is great.

Marrakesh Grill is usually busier and is slightly further away from the office. You can’t put a price on quick service. Honestly, the only way I would consider going back is if they needed me to help with their PR strategy.

What’s something you want to do in the next year that you’ve never done before?

I’ve never been abroad on my own, so I want to try that one day.

Growing up in London I’ve had a good taste of city life and so I’d like to go somewhere completely different. I’ve been to Amsterdam, but it just felt like a less-fun version of London.

I have a friend in South Korea that I could go and visit, and maybe I could stop in Japan for a while too. Or I’d also like to go to New York. Either way, travelling is something I want to explore more.
