Meet the Team: Imany Shakes

What do you enjoy the most about working at Spreckley?

There’s a real collaborative culture here. Everyone is always happy to help out and support on a project, no matter their job title. Whether it’s talking through an idea or getting thoughtful feedback on a piece of work, everyone is eager to help.

I am also a fan of the never-ending supply of biscuits in the office that always appear after lunch – definitely an afternoon motivator.

How did you hear about Spreckley and why did you want to join?

Last summer I took part in the Taylor Bennett Foundation & Brunswick Group strategic communications internship, which gave me a more in-depth understanding of the day-to-day tasks of a PR Account Executive. It helped me to connect with comms specialists across a wide variety of sectors and practices from M&A to geopolitical advisory PR.

A key highlight was presenting an original communications strategy in front of a team of Brunswick directors, which boosted my confidence and solidified my interest in developing crisis strategies. On completion, I knew that I wanted to work in the PR & communications sector.

Fortunately, my good friend and fellow PR professional, Sabihah Choudhury, alerted me to a vacancy at Spreckley a couple of months later. I was working as a civil servant at the time but had realised it wasn’t quite the right path for me, so the timing couldn’t have been better. After interviewing with Sean, I knew the role was the right fit and a natural next step in my career.

What’s been the most exciting PR campaign you’ve worked on and why?

One standout was securing a media campaign for Exotec, a French warehouse robotics company with a US publication. After pitching a press release on their behalf, a New York-based journalist reached out to set up an interview.

Facilitating that opportunity and being the main point of contact between three different time zones was really engaging and reinforced how much I enjoy the relationship-building, strategic thinking and fast-paced coordination.

What was your first job?

When I was 17, I worked at my school’s gym, keeping the equipment clean and assisting in booking the sports facilities for the public.

But the job description had an unexpected twist: during weekends, I would host children’s parties there. My Saturday evenings were spent inflating bouncy castles and donning Elsa and Peppa Pig costumes. I was a gym assistant by day, Disney princess by night!

If you weren’t in PR, what would you be doing instead?

I’ve always wanted to be a journalist/newsreader and report breaking stories to the world. Helping to shine a light on stories and individuals who deserve to be seen and heard is really meaningful to me.

I could also see myself as a children’s dance teacher. I attended dance classes in both primary and secondary school, and I can safely say this was my favourite extracurricular activity. Passing on that same joy to the next generation would be hugely rewarding.

Tell us one thing about you that surprises people?

My (unintentional) internet stardom. A TikTok video of mine went viral overnight after posting a murder mystery game using different TV show characters. I woke up to over 10,000 likes and a stream of new followers. Who knew a random filter trend, posted on a random day, would be the recipe for success? But the fans had spoken, so I turned it into a mini–series!

What’s your favourite thing to do outside of work?

I love hiring a private booth and going for a karaoke session with my friends.  My go-to song has recently been Beyoncé’s CUFF IT and Raindance by Dave & Tems if it’s a duet.

Who had the most influence on you growing up?

Both of my parents were extremely influential in my life. I was basically my dad’s shadow growing up; whatever he did, I wanted to do. If his outfit was green, mine would be too. His favourite musical artists – Beres Hammond and Bob Marley – became my favourites too.

That being said, my mum was my personal Superwoman. I was in awe of everything she did, her kindness, hardworking nature and her clothes/perfume collection! I knew I wanted to be just like her when I grew up.

Together, they gave my siblings and me the best advice, cooked the best meals and instilled lifelong values in us from a young age. One that has always stayed with me was to never compare myself to anyone else, but to focus on being the best version of myself.

What’s your go-to lunch on Leather Lane?

It’s a bit of a sensitive subject, but it would have to be the infamous Lebanese Grill Express, which caught fire in July 2026. The Chicken Shawarma box was my go-to, and the portions were big enough to take leftovers home for only £8.50. Truly a Farringdon staple.

I hope it gets rebuilt and restored soon. In the meantime, this gives me an excuse to explore what else Leather Lane has to offer.

What’s something you want to do in the next year that you’ve never done before?

It’s my goal to do a solo trip outside of Europe next year. I went to Lisbon solo for my birthday this year and absolutely loved it. There’s something quite liberating about doing everything on your own terms. It brought back so many fond memories of my year abroad when I lived in Montpellier, France & Murcia, Spain.

Next, I’d like to go somewhere further away and even learn another language so I can connect with even more people. Zanzibar, Mauritius and Brazil are all on my bucket list.

Favourite quote

One of my personal favourites is “She’s an icon, she’s a legend, and she is the moment.” by the one and only Wendy Williams.
